Primary 7 Curriculum Content

Language & Literacy

Reading: Children will be studying ‘Spirit of the Titanic’ to compliment World Around Us topic -. Guided reading sessions using Pig Heart Boy, Matilda, Goodnight Mr Tom, Danny the Champion of the Word and Cartoon Kid.

Strategies: Continuation of reciprocal reading approach teaching the skills and strategies involved to develop comprehension.

Writing:  Recount writing and exploring Narrative writing through poetry.

Punctuation and Grammar: Demonstrate a consistent use of paragraphing in narrative writing and the implementation of effective grammar and punctuation to create drama and suspense

Spelling: Have A Go Spelling Books 2- 4 Units 21 – 25

Mathematics & Numeracy

Mental Maths: Addition (adding any multiple of 10 to any multiple of 100) and Multiplication/Division (know squares of all integers from 1 to 10 and multiplication facts up to 12×12)

Number: Investigating the use of Brackets and partitioning through BIDMAS. Pupils will also complete a financial capability challenge as they implement their knowledge of budgeting, profit and loss and Interest rates from the previous term. Pupils will also carry out tasks on currency conversions.

Other Areas: Pupils will draw and identify a range of angles as well as developing their knowledge of Time Zones. Pupils will investigate Speed, Distance and Time Problems.

Problem Solving: Continuation of weekly problem solving activity exploring all areas of number and shape, space and measure with a focus on the strategies of; Try a Simpler Case and Produce a List or Table. Children will continue to develop the strategy of Bar Modelling.

 

 

World Around Us.

It’s a Disaster: Specific focus on The Great Famine and the impact on Irish Society. We will also begin studying the fate of the Titanic, investigating life on board the ship and the infamous night it sank. Scientific investigation: Pupils will investigate temperature and soluble and insoluble materials. Pupils will also complete an investigation into volcanic eruptions.

Medics in Primary Schools: Students from Queen’s University will be in Primary 7 each Thursday afternoon teaching the children about the Human Body  and conducting experiments related to body organs and systems.

Religious Education

Children will complete work through the Grow in Love programme with particular focus being placed on Sacrament of Confirmation. Children will focus appreciate how the Holy Spirit helped the apostles to spread the message of God’s Kingdom and develop the understanding of The Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit.

Study of the importance of Lent, Easter and the resurrection of Jesus.

Personal Development & Mutual Understanding

Living Learning Together: Unit 5 – Says Who?

Pupils will investigate and understand a range of ways for interacting with others and use a range of strategies to manage conflict. Pupils will understand ways to make informed and responsible choices as they work, play and learn together.

 

The Arts

Music:  Pupils will prepare for their Sacrament of Confirmation and continue to develop their sound poems and songs related to Disasters and seasonal changes around the world. School Show preparations will also begin.

Art: Easter Garden creation and observational sketches using charcoal of The Titanic.

Drama:  Preparation for School Show.

Physical Education (Please ensure all children have PE gear each Monday and Friday)

Team Games: Pupils will enhance their skills of; Catching, Kicking, Handling and Striking.

Children will have a Gaelic coach on a Monday and a Games coach on a Friday. The children will also continue their weekly swimming lessons.

Continuation of The Daily Mile, Trim Trail and Play Park with the children.
