Language & Literacy
Reading: Big Cat Reading Scheme including a range of new fiction and non-fiction titles. Accelerated reading to be carried out at home also. As well as the class novel, Charlotte’s Web. Remember to read with fluency, confidence expression. Take note of different types of punctuation and demonstrate in practice. Children will continue to develop the comprehension skills of summarising, questioning, visualisation and inference.
Writing: Main Focus: Continued exploration of ‘Non-Chronological Reports,’ before exploring fantasy space setting creative writing, focusing on using the main points of a story, key events and using story maps. Continue to use adjectives and adverbs in their independent writing. Spelling: will be explored using the ‘Have A Go Spelling Manual Book 2’. Spelling Dictations carried out weekly.
Talking and Listening: Listening actively and sharing opinions on class novel. Articulate main ideas and summarise orally and in written form, some interesting events and chapters of the class novel. Children will engage in ‘hot-seating’ to further develop their talking and listening and their understanding of the novel and guided reading books. Use “Leap Into Listening” activities expanding auditory memory
Mathematics & Numeracy
Mental Maths focus: Children will be able to: Recall addition and subtraction number facts to 100. State facts about Th, H, T and O numbers. Recite 2 – 12 times tables. Recall division facts by 2 – 10. Recognise and sequence number patterns to 9,999.
Number and other area of maths: Fractions: recognise and partition shapes into1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/8 and 1/10. Understand 8 points of the compass and turning clockwise and anti-clockwise through right angles. Classify shapes under pyramids and prisms and continue work with 2d and 3d shapes. Children continue to explore a variety of function machines to include two/three step machines and learn about inputs, outputs and functions. This will include multiplication, division, adding and subtraction.
Problem Solving Strategy: Children will focus on the skills of ‘Reason Logically,’ and ‘Draw a picture,’ in relation to their exploration of Fractions. Children will be challenged to decide which operations to use to solve a problem with greater independence. Continue to develop “Bar Modelling” as a strategy which uses pictures to help children understand problems better.
World Around Us.
Theme and topic: ‘Reach for the Stars.’
We will continue to explore areas of space in greater detail, including looking at constellations and the milky-way. Children will investigate how astronauts can breathe in space. We will then progress to looking at ‘stars,’ in the world today, exploring pros and cons of fame, as well as exploring what makes a positive role-model. The children will also explore their aspirations and personal targets, setting and reviewing targets for the remainder of the school year, time at school and beyond. Children will take part in a space investigation to make a model of the Soyuz Reentry capsule and choose a parachute to slow its descent.
Religious Education
Children will begin the ‘Grow in Love,’ programme. They will explore God’s Love for us in the stories of Moses and Abraham. Children will participate in the 2020 Trocaire Lenten Programme during the season of Lent, exploring the two main elements of Prayer, and Fasting. Children will discuss and learn about Easter.
Personal Development & Mutual Understanding
Living Learning Together Box:
Looking at the rights of a child as part of the on-going journey of being a ‘Rights Respecting School’. Continued revision of the ‘Golden Rules’ and how to sustain friendships in school.
Compose a range of prayers to be said during Lent.
The Arts
Music: Linked to Grow in Love programme / Songs for ‘green day’.
Drama: Questioning/Hot-seating activities linked to Charlotte’s Web and guided reading sessions. Debating
Physical Education
Continued fundamental soccer coaching each Friday. Swimming every Thursday for P5A (5th March – 2nd April)
