Language & Literacy

Reading: Class novel: ‘Thief’, ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom and ‘The Witches’

Reading and progressing through Accelerated Reading Scheme. Please sign up to home connect to check your child’s progress.

Guided Reading: Fiction/Non-fiction texts focusing developing the four strategies of reading for inference (summarising, questioning, predicting and clarifying).

Phonics/ Spellings: Have a Go Spelling Book: Variations for the ending: “us, ous, scious”, “tion”, “able”, prefixes “un, dis, in, re”, “de, im, pre, mis, over”, suffixes “ful, ness, less”

Writing: Narrative Writing (genre): How to write a narrative text and develop the ability to compose an opening and an ending within a narrative story.

Mathematics & Numeracy

Mental Maths focus: Understand and use decimals, fractions and percentages in percentage increase and decrease and explore the relationship between them. Understand the factors and multiples of numbers. Understand prime, squared and triangular numbers.

Number: Explain what a percentage is and how it relates to fractions and decimals. Find a simple percentage of an amount using pupils’ knowledge of fractions. Add and subtract decimals using mental strategies and written methods (tenths and hundredths). Multiply decimals by a single digit. Compare and order positive and negative numbers. Carry out simple calculations involving negative numbers by counting on and back.

Other Area of Numeracy: Identifying the different types of angles. Talk about how and why measurement is used in everyday life. Use the measurements of everyday items to help estimate length, weight and volume. Calculate missing angles in different types of triangles. Talk about equivalences between related metric units and write them using their abbreviations. Talk about the key features of a range of data and discuss information which is presented in this way.

Calculate the mean, the mode and the median of a given set of numerical data

 

Problem Solving Strategy: Complete a number problem solving activities focusing on use the strategy of Making a Conjecture and Working Backwards.

World Around Us.

Theme and topic: Raiders and Traders!

Science investigation being carried out: Pupils will investigate the concept of floating linked to their Viking long ship.

Children will explore the history of Viking artefacts and beliefs with relation to Viking gods.

They will investigate evidence of Viking settlements in Ireland, identifying reasons for their settlements and aspects of their daily life.

Living Learning Together Box- Check it Out First! In this theme the children will learn how to analyse the opinions of others such as the media to make informed choices well.

How we waste food while others starve – self management of our resources

Looking at rights, responsibilities and rules for how we look after our world.

The Arts

Music: Children will explore music and rhythm through the “Viking Saga” scheme.

Art: Examining Viking runes and use resources to create their own Viking jewellery/artefacts.

Physical Education

Weekly Gaelic coaching.

Classes will be timetabled to use the trim trail, Serenity Playground and Daily Mile.
