Language & Literacy
Reading: Responding to a variety of Big Books for example ‘Goldilocks and The Three Bears’ and ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and continue guided reading using Collins Big Cat and Ginn 360. Oxford Reading Tree will be used for ‘Easy reads’ at home.
Writing: Focusing on different types of poetry and continuing with Recount Writing to include title, specific participants in writing, chronological order, descriptive language and the use of connectives.
Grammar: connectives, revision of nouns, verbs and adjectives, time connectives.
Phonics: Digraphs and split digraphs – ng, ay, ea (as in ee), igh (as ie), y (as in ie) and y (as in ee).
Mathematics & Numeracy
Mental Maths focus: Addition and subtraction using partitioning using the hundred square,
counting to 100 forwards and backwards, finding half and quarter of a number and inverse operations.
Number and other area of maths:
- Using simple number facts to carry out more complex additions (e.g. 5 + 2 = 7 so 85 + 2 = 87)
- Commutative addition and subtraction.
- Formal addition and subtraction of two digit numbers without exchange.
- Identifying simple everyday fractions e.g. halves and quarters and thirds of amounts and shapes.
- Giving change and making amounts up to £1.
- Position, movement and direction (Shape and Space).
- Weight- comparing, ordering and introducing how to record it.
Problem Solving: Bar Modelling (using pictures to understand problems better) and work backwards.
World Around Us.
Home Sweet Home – Children will learn about the various types of homes around the world for both people and animals. Through research and practical activities children will come to an understanding of the need for homes for protection. Children will also explore what makes a home vs a house and the issue of homelessness.
Science investigation – Children will investigate different properties of materials and their uses. Life cycle of a plant – children will have the opportunity to plant a seed.
Religious Education
Grow in Love theme: Lent and Making Good Choices ( First Confession)
Personal Development & Mutual Understanding
Build children’s understanding of diversity and not making assumptions about people.
The Arts
Music: Songs for First Penance, Grow in Love programme and First Confession.
Art: Children will study various artist i.e. JP Rooney and Martin Hasson and create art pieces in their style.
Physical Education
Hurling– Children will receive weekly coaching sessions from a professional GAA coach. In these sessions children will work on their skills of spatial awareness and ball handling skills.
Games – practise and develop the skills of handling, hitting and kicking through a range of activities and using a variety of equipment. Develop the skills relevant to games, including running, stopping, jumping and skipping.
